September 11th Family Group Keeps the Memory of 9/11 Victims Alive

On September 9th, 2007 from 12pm to 2pm September 11th Family Group, www.September11FamilyGroup.org will hold a memorial ceremony in Asser Levy/Seaside Park in Brooklyn, NY, to commemorate the 6th anniversary of the September 11th tragedy. The ceremony will take place at the September 11 Memorial Square located in Seaside Park, West 5h Street and Surf Avenue, Brooklyn, New York
September 11 Family Group, a Brooklyn-based foundation supporting the families of victims of 9/11formed out of the recognition that many Russian families where mourning loved ones who perished in the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. In their need to gather together and remember their lost friends and relatives, they approached the Asser Levy Park commission. The organization first planted a tree, and in 2004, with the help with the financial contribution of the families themselves and other individuals and organizations from the Russian-American community, they erected a granite planter, which displays names and pave a small pathway adorned with benches. This area of the park is called Memorial Square.
The park was selected for its South Brooklyn location, close, in vicinity, to the heart of the Russian community. Though, most of the members of Family Group are Russians, all families who fell victim to the tragedy are encouraged to join. "We would be happy to have non-Russian names as well in the organization, says Roman Gertsberg, Chairman of September 11 Family Group.
The purpose of the event is to continue honoring the memory of the people who perished in the disaster. "Immediately after the tragedy, we had a lot of people who wanted to be together. Six years has passed and we don't have a big crowd anymore. Our mission is to save the memory of our relatives and to constantly remind people that it happened and that we should do everything possible to prevent this kind tragedy from reoccurring." says Valeriy Savinkin., Executive Director of the Group.
September 11 Family Group, www.September11FamilyGroup.org, was formed by the friends and family members of those who perished in the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. The organization has built a Memorial in Seaside Park in commemoration of the victims of the tragedy, with the financial contribution of the families themselves and other individuals and organizations from the Russian-American community.
